Can Your Attitude Build You a Successful Home Based Business?
When someone first told me that mindset is the key factor in a successful home based business, I doubted that was really true for me. Maybe to someone who has the technical knowledge, who is good at sales, who has created her own product, mindset is the difference. But for me – someone who had none of those things – there was no way mindset could determine my success or failure. I’ve always been a positive thinker, and that fact hadn’t earned me a dime yet.
I discovered the critical importance of mindset by accident. Of all the things to work on in developing my successful home based business – mindset, website creation, copy writing, sales processes, etc. – mindset was the one I was best at. So it was the one I did a lot of. And it just so happened that with the right mindset, all of the other things that seemed so hard worked out, one way or another.
Yesterday I saw yet another example of how mindset determines your life – your entire life. I was in a discussion group about problems, how you deal with them, and whether there is a gift in every problem. I am a firm believer that every “problem” or challenge presents an opportunity for positive change or growth, ultimately. I expressed to the group that in my life, there had been a silver lining to every cloud.
Another member of the group, in a rather sullen tone, stated that she sees a problem as a problem. She couldn’t see anything good about the fact that her knee hurts. She couldn’t see anything good about unfairly losing her job due to a medical condition.
I thought the upside was that she has legs, she can walk, the doctor can likely give her relief from the pain. She has a new job. I don’t know if she likes it as well, but if not, she’s free to explore other jobs, careers, options. It occurred to me that she will probably never see life as anything other than a daily struggle.
As I sat there thinking about how different our mindsets are, I started realizing how different our lives are too. She works a minimum wage type job at a department store. When she works is dictated by someone else, as is how much salary she can make per week. She will have this type of job until she retires. She has a small house that’s not big enough for her family, can’t afford anything beyond the bare necessities for her kids, and lives paycheck to paycheck without any real job satisfaction.
I on the other hand am self-employed, can basically work when I want and earn as much money as I want, and have the ability to take my career and my business in whatever direction I want. I don’t have to work towards “retirement,” because I already decide when to work and for how long. As I become more successful, the number of hours I have to work is decreasing. I’m not financially free yet, but there’s certainly a light at the end of the tunnel. I have a house with extra bedrooms and I can send my kids to private schools and put them in all kinds of extra activities.
Is the difference between the two of us our mindset? Well, I know a comparison of one person against one other person doesn’t make for a very scientific study. But, we both live in this same free world with the same ability to make any choices we want. At least that’s how I see it.
Do your own study. Compare yourself to someone more financially successful than you are. In my experience, you’ll find that the other person is no “better” than you are. Chances are, she’s just decided to be more successful than you’ve decided to be. The beauty of it is – it’s never too late to change how you think.
