3 Steps to Identifying Your Bad Habit

Last time we talked about how the difference in success and failure is the difference in a few healthy habits repeated daily and a few bad habits repeated daily.

But identifying the bad habit you need to break to get on the success track can be difficult. The nature of a habit is that it’s so routine that you may not even recognize the small errors in judgment you’re making that are completely sabotaging your success.

Breaking bad habits requires that you first identify the bad habit, and next figure out how to change it. There are three steps to identifying a bad habit.

First, pick an area of your life that you’re looking for change in. Maybe you can’t get your mindset right for success. Maybe you don’t have enough time to work on your business. Maybe you can’t figure out what steps to take to make your business successful.

When looking for more time to work on my internet business, i made my list of “if i could . . .” It consisted of things like working at my other career less, having more hours from my nanny, and sleeping less.

I didn’t really want more hours from my nanny. That meant more time away from my kids. That moved me away from my goal, not towards it. So i started looking for things i could do to turn my work hours into more productive hours. Remember, for things to change for me, i had to change.

Instead, i looked at what i could do to change. What bad habit was i suffering from while she was here that was costing me time? What healthy habits was i not engaging in that could save me time?

I also adopted new healthy habits. I took everything i needed to accomplish the things on my “to do” list and put it on one side of my desk. I worked only from that side of my desk so that i couldn’t come across anything else that would get me off track.

Identifying bad habits that need to go, and healthy habits that need to come, is relatively easy compared to the task of actually breaking bad habits or adopting healthy habits. But it’s the first and a very important step towards your success.
