Is Goal Setting the Wrong Path For the Work at Home Mom?

- -

I’ve spent the last two weeks really enjoying my kids, reflecting on 2008, and looking forward to 2009.  You can pick any time to change your life.  You can set new goals at the beginning of the month, week, or even day.  I am constantly setting and revising goals.

But I spend a lot of time on this around the new year.  It’s a good time to reflect on what’s worked, what hasn’t worked, what can be done to improve my personal and business life.

This year, I’ve made a lot of positive change in just the first ten days.  One of the best things I’ve done is to abandon my list of “things” that I want.  I always keep close at hand my list of things I want to “have, be, and do.”  It keeps me focused on the future and my goals for being “better.”

Anyone who has been working at home for any length of time has no doubt been taught that personal growth is a huge component to your business success.  You must become a better person to have a more successful business and make more money.  I can’t argue with this.  I believe strongly in it in fact.

But I recently looked at my four-year-old and thought “wow, where did those four years go?!”  It’s been four great years and I love watching her grow up everyday.  I am so blessed to have been a work at home mom her entire life.

On this particular day I was especially preoccupied with work.  And I was suddenly struck by the feeling that I was missing so many precious moments of her perfect little four year old days because I was too busy trying to make her life better.

But to her, life is already perfect.  And how many perfect moments in life have I missed out on by being stuck in my goal-centered, future-driven world?  All of my kids are growing up so fast.  Am I really reaping the benefits of being a work at home mom?  Or does living in the future cause me to miss out on as much as the parent who drops her kid at daycare for 40-plus hours a week?

One of my favorite quotes is “the present moment holds infinite riches beyond my wildest dreams.”  So this year I’ve replaced my “have, be, do” goals list with a list of things that I have NOW, things that I am NOW, and things that I do NOW.  Everyday, all day I have gratitude for all of those things.  I relish the moments that are now.

It doesn’t work to say to yourself, “when I (fill in your blank) I’ll stop chasing my dreams and start having gratitude.”  My first real job paid me $23,220 a year.  At the time I would have told you that a beautiful home, happy family, and six figure income would make my life complete.  But now I have all of those things.  But I don’t feel like my life is complete.  I just have a new set of wants.

My point is, for those who have the spirit for working at home, life is never complete.  You know — success is a journey, not a destination.  And, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So, I didn’t burn my list of goals.  I still want to vacation in the Figi Islands, be retired from my j-o-b, and donate unthinkable amounts of money to my favorite causes.  I still practice visualization of my “better” life.  But only AFTER I give gratitude again and again for all that I have, am and do in this present moment.

  1. Hi Jennifer,

I saw your comment on Alex Jeffreys blog , asking how to get more traffic and tips on product creation.

I’ve just completed Alex’s pilot mentoring course and I have some tips for you in both these areas.

One of the EASIEST ways to start building a list of people is from ‘Giveaways’. You contribute a free quality info-product, typically an e-book, and people give you their name and e-mail address in exchange. You then build a relationship with the people on your list, via e-mail, and your blog, so they know you, like you and trust you. Then you can recommend products to them and make sales.

I’ve a list of the latest Giveaway you can you join on my blog under the ‘JV Giveaway’ page.

All product creation should be based around the wants of market. To find what the market wants just visit the forums of a specific niche and ask questions related to that niche and read the Q & A other people leave. Then ask them if they would pay for something which answered those questions and how much they would pay. Then go and create the product, or even get other people to create it for you and offer them their web links in the final product.
