Did You Take a Wrong Turn? Avoiding Persistent Failure in Your Online Business.

Last time we talked about how persistence can be fatal to your home business success if it is random rather than guided.  And, for most people with a new online business, persistence is fatally random, if you are persistent at all.

It is hard to empathize with the masses who play around with making money online.  But my heart breaks for those who unwaveringly persist in making their new online business a success, but who do so with a strategy that is certain to produce ongoing failure.  I feel so strongly for those people because I used to be one.

When I first started working online, I took every wrong turn there was — and invented a few new ones of my own.  For me, the wrong turns were things like moving from one program to the next because I thought I’d found an easier product or service to sell.  Buying each new Ebook that the internet marketing “gurus” promoted; thinking each time that this could be the product that changed my life.  And studying, learning, planning without taking the actions that were crucial for my business.

Brian Tracy says “Persistence is self-discipline in action.”  I once prided myself on my failing internet business because I was persistent.  I wasn’t giving up.  But this definition of persistence changed things for me.   Because self-discipline is not about bouncing all over the internet trying to find the key to overnight riches.  In fact, I’m pretty sure that’s the antithesis of self-discipline.

As I started changing the way I looked at persistence, it became immediately obvious that  none of those things I had formerly persisted in would ever lead me to online business success.  I discovered that truly, the only person that could change my life was me.  Jim Rohn couldn’t change me.  The “Guru’s Guide to $1,000,000 a Day on the Internet” couldn’t change me.  The best network marketing product on the planet couldn’t change me.  Even all the knowledge in the world couldn’t change me.  Unless I put it into action and changed for myself.

People and products don’t change you.  They can give you the information you need to change, but only you can take the needed action to change you.  And chances are, if you are not finding the success you want in your online business, you need to change from random persistence to directed (self-disciplined) persistence.  To do this, you are going to need two road maps to follow.  One road map for personal success, and one road map for business success.

Different people need different mentors.  Someone who “speaks” to me may not “speak” to you at all.  And it’s crucial to have the right mentor (road map) for you because, as I said, the mentor and his/her product won’t change you.  It will only give you the information you need to change yourself.  Thus the importance of having a mentor that speaks to you.

So I can’t tell you which road map you must buy.  But I can tell you what to look for.  And what to avoid.  You must have something that is step-by-step and comprehensive.  A business road map about how to double your affiliate commissions won’t do.  You need to be walked through how to set up your business from step one.  From buying your domain to creating your landing page to driving traffic to offering back end products.  EVERY internet marketing product claims to be “newbie” friendly, but they aren’t.

A personal road map about the power of persuasion will provide you a good piece of the skills you need.  But again, it’s not comprehensive enough.  You need something that walks you through all aspects of your life.  Something that forces you to spend many months looking at what you’re doing and what you should be doing.  Something that you can follow for the rest of your life.  Your work on personal growth will never end.

The two road maps that have the biggest affect on my journey to find personal and business success are Jim Rohn’s One Year Success Plan and Tellman Knudson’s List Building Club.  Check them out.  If they aren’t a fit for you, find something that is as comprehensive and as step-by-step as these teachings and start it today.  You’ll be surprised how quickly your small daily actions result in tremendous successes.  Okay, Go!  Do!  Now!
