Personal Development for Couch Potatoes?

dogoncouchAffirmations are the easiest and most effective way to change your life.  Thoughts are things.  Your thoughts create your life.  You become what you think about most of the time.  Every well-known personal development philosopher has expressed this idea using similar words.

If you can actually create something in your life by merely thinking about it, and you can, then why isn’t everyone on the planet fabulously rich and happy?

The first, and most simple reason, is that very few people believe they can change their life through affirmation, visualization, and just plain old positive thinking.  So they walk around all day thinking “life is hard” thoughts.

What this great majority sadly fails to realize is that their thoughts are creating their hard lives.  You see, the fact that you become what you think about most of the time is true whether you believe in it or not.

Let’s say you are part of the fortunate minority that realizes you can have everything you ever wanted through consistent use of affirmations.  Is the next step to go lay on the couch and repeat “I have a million dollars” until the money falls from the sky?

Okay, obviously not.  I’ve said this before, but after spending a couple of days writing on the power of affirmations I feel compelled to say it again.  The problem with what’s become known as the Law of Attraction is that it’s only half the story.

To make your thoughts become things you must first have a burning desire for what you want, not just a wish or a dream or a hope.  Next you must take action to turn your thoughts into reality.

Is this inconsistent with what I previously said about the power of affirmations?  No.  Does it mean that you have to develop an unwavering belief in the truth of your affirmations before you begin using them to change your life?  No.

So, get up off the couch.  Here’s how you use affirmations to get what you want.

Let’s say for example that you want to make your new business successful.  First, you come up with a series of short, specific affirmations.  One is “my website gets 1000 unique hits a day.”

You may initially hear your inner voice saying “no it doesn’t and it never will.”  But, don’t give up.  You just have to say it enough times to break down the wall that is your conscious mind.

If you have a burning desire for the success of your new business, and a belief that you can be successful, you will soon begin to say this affirmation as if it were true.  And then — it will be true.

How does it translate from belief to reality?  The law of action.

Saying and believing that you get 1000 unique visitors a day to your website is going to propel you towards the action necessary to make it a reality.  You are going to take the steps necessary to generate traffic to your website.

Ugh.  Sounds like work.  You will find, however, that when you have a burning desire for something, the “work” it will take to get you there will come naturally.  You’ll want to do it.  It will often be fun and even effortless.

No, it’s not easy all the time.  But it is simple.  And, anyone can change her life if she wants to bad enough.  And, really, isn’t living the life you’ve only dreamed of until now worth a little work?
