Here’s the thing I wish I had known when I started my first online business in 1997. Well, it’s actually one of several?things that would have saved me many years and much money. But, it’s probably the biggest thing.
There is not a product, service, or piece of software out there that is going to make you $10,000 in your first 30 days.
And it’s not even so much about me. Because this is also the biggest mistake I’ve seen friends, colleagues, and clients make over the years.
Your enthusiasm for learning when you first start your online business is admirable. I felt completely unstoppable, and was committed to do anything to make this “internet thing” work.
And that’s where the expert copywriters come in. They seize upon your naive optimism and late-night “how to make money online” Google searches. And they promise you the moon.
What I find most interesting about this is that you don’t have to be a “sucker” to get sucked into these sales letters. For example, we all know better than to believe the advertising we hear on TV.
I can’t count the number of times my kids have come to me during a commercial, and with genuine excitement in their voices, told me about the latest product that is going to be life-changing. Most recently, the cup you shake for 2 minutes that magically produces a Smoothie King-quality drink without the time, effort or expense. Sorry, I’m just not buying it (literally!).
The Psychology Behind All the “Buying”
But I did buy hundreds, and thousands, of dollars worth of products and services that guaranteed not only that I could get rich using their stuff in my online business, but that it would actually be?easy. (The $53,000 is a conservative accounting of things!).
Why do we buy?
In a word, “HOPE.”
Because the chance that a $97, $497, or even $997 product could be the “game changer” for your business, is worth the risk of the wasted money if it turns out not to be. Which is why so many of us keep buying long after we know better. Because the emotions triggered by “hope” are powerful motivators.
Truth is, 90% (or more) of the business education products you buy are things you don’t need. At least not now, and probably ever. I am a firm believer in the fact that you always have to be investing in yourself and your business, and in learning how to do things in new and better ways. But, you also have to be smart about it. And that’s what this formula makes you.
